Since September 11th, 2001, one of the buzzword topics in Public Safety is “data sharing”. Homeland security provided funding to states to create better and more automated methods of data sharing. As Wisconsin started to develop a data sharing model for Law Enforcement, they offered grants for agencies to fund equipment and programming to join the project. I applied for a grant on behalf of the County LE agencies and we were the first to join the State and one the first to actually implement our solution. This project was successful, being recognized by the state and also being highlighted at some National conferences where I was asked to present or be on a panel to discuss the successes and challenges of the project. The project is named WIJIS (Wisconsin Justice Information Sharing) and has been a tremendous opportunity to represent my community on the State and Federal level and at the same time develop relationships and learning different perspectives. All of this has better positioned La Crosse County as a cooperative leader in data sharing. That is the business aspect of participating in a project of this type and size. The cool part is that more offenders are being caught and prosecuted every day because, in part, of the involvement of La Crosse County.
