With the introduction of automation to the Public Safety world, some Law Enforcement agencies were putting computers in squad cars in the late 80’s. Usually these were larger, more progressive agencies that had resources and talent to get involved with the new technology. I was aware of these agencies on the east side of the state and had participated in demonstrations and visited agencies with systems that were up and running. As my awareness and enthusiasm grew, I would suggest to my Administrator that I be given an opportunity to discuss this with the local area Chiefs of Police at their regular meetings. I approached my boss each year, for 14 years before being given the green light. Within two years we had our first attempt working and for several years now, every patrol car in the County, all agencies has a computer that communicates directly with the Computer Aided Dispatch system used by the 911 center, the State and Federal data systems as well as having broadband capability allowing the use of pictures, web browsing and accessing many other data sources. Most officers today won’t even consider using a squad car without a computer.
